Srinagar, Aug 30: Scores of tipper drivers today staged a protest against the seizure of their vehicles by district administration in Pulwama district of south Kashmir and blocked road to Shopian.
The tipper drivers who extract boulders with permission of concerned departments said that their vehicles were seized by the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama “without any reason”. “We pay royalty to Fisheries, Geology and Mining Department but despite of this our tippers were seized and that is why we have come out on roads,” the drivers said.
Amid sloganeering, the drivers blocked Pulwama-Shopian road for several hours and sought release of their tippers. The tipper drivers said they extract boulders from Lassipora, Bandzoo and Rajpora areas of the district. “We don’t do it at our own but with proper permission and by paying royalties. However seizing of vehicles is outrageous,” they said.
Meanwhile, according to reports, the drivers were later asked to pay Rs. 1000 fine each and deposit that with Red Cross Society after which their tippers were released.
