Ties with Bangladesh

India has been pursuingthe policy of improving and strengthening friendly ties with Bangladesh where a democratically elected Government under Sheikh Hasina is in power. It is satisfying that Bangladesh realizes the benefits of friendly relations with its big neighbour and India has also shown frugality in assisting Bangladesh in various ways. India is deeply interested in the progress and welfare of the people in Bangladesh. Naturally, a number of protocols have been signed by the two sides earlier as well as during the current visit of Sheikh Hasina.
We learn that the two sides inked nearly two dozen pacts in key areas of defence and civil nuclear cooperation after “productive” talks between Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  We are happy to know that India clearly understands that a prosperous and self sufficient Bangladesh would be of great support to Indian democracy. Obviously, India does provide whatever support she can to boost the economy and industrial base of Bangladesh. After in-depth talks Prime Minister Modi announced a line of concessional credit of USD 4.5 billion for implementation of projects in Bangladesh. Announcing an additional line of credit of USD 500 million to Bangladesh for military supplies, Modi said it will be driven by the requirement of that country.
Taking into account the regional strategy in the area on the eastern part of India, we find that Bangladesh friendship is of crucial importance to India. Additionally, we are aware that religious extremist forces are active in Bangladesh and also in connivance with external subversive agencies. This has to be fought politically and the redeeming factor is that there is a strong segment of people in Bangladesh who believe in democracy and would not want religious extremism to hold Bangladesh in its grips. Strengthening democracy and secular system in Bangladesh also means strengthening the same phenomenon in India. As such we welcome the visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister and signing of two dozen protocols that reflect cordial relations between the two countries. Teesta river issue is an irritant but the Prime Minister has assured Bangladesh premier that India is keen to resolve it and the issue should be resolved.
