Three die in Thane over superstition

THANE, Nov 22: The Rural Police have recovered three bodies of men who allegedly died while conducting an ‘experiment to attain nirvana’ in the jungles of Chande village near Khardi in Shahapur taluka of the district last week. However, a fourth person in the alleged suicide pact was saved, as he backed out at the last moment, police said.

The investigations into the incident has revealed that the trio who were in isolation for last couple of months were preparing for the experiment on the day of ‘Amavasya’ (moonless night) on November 14. They fell prey to the idea floated by one Nitin Bere (35), a self-proclaimed “Bhagat”.

According to police, in this experiment if one ties a cloth around the neck and slides down he gets energy boost and attains nirvana. As per the plan, on the Amavasya day on November 14, Bere brought four sarees from his house for the purpose and all the four were set to attain nirvana but at the last moment, the fourth person backed out due to fear. However, Bere, Mahendra Dubele (30) and his nephew Mukesh Dhavat (22) lost their lives in this experiment and their bodies were recovered on Friday last.

Police believe that there was no witchcraft or black magic involved in it but just a blind faith of attaining bliss in their life and in this, the victims have lost their lives. The Shahapur police have ruled out any foul play in their deaths, and have registered a case of accidental death in this regard.
