JAMMU, May 9: Unidentified thieves struck a temple near Tawi Bridge in Jammu district and fled with cash and gold ornaments worth several lakhs during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
The incident took place at Shiv Paravati Sheesh Mahal Temple, located barely a few hundred metres from Police Station Nowabad.
Temple priest Om Parkash Shastri said the thieves entered the shrine after allegedly damaging the CCTV cameras installed on the premises.
He said cash was stolen from three donation boxes while two gold ornaments weighing around 8 grams each, adorned on the deity, were also taken away.
“The total value of the stolen cash and ornaments is several lakhs,” the priest claimed.
Shastri said a similar theft had taken place in the temple on Diwali last year, following which night patrolling in the area was intensified. He demanded enhanced night patrolling again to check such incidents.
Meanwhile, police have registered FIR No. 77/2026 under relevant sections of law at Police Station Nowabad and started investigation into the case.
The CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned to identify the accused, officials said, adding that no arrests had been made so far.
