Crime Has Changed its Address now a days ,A decade ago, protecting your home meant locking the door and installing a grill. Today, the most valuable things you own, money, identity, photos and contacts, which live inside 6-inch device in your pocket called mobile and the thief no longer needs to break your door, he only needs to break your trust .The crime scene has moved from street to screen ten years ago a thief needed to break your door, window today he breaks your OTP.
Cyber crime is any criminal activity that uses a computer, network, or digital device as the tool, from a fake SMS that empties your bank account to a morphed video that destroys a teenager’s life, cyber crime has become the fastest-growing form of crime worldwide
The scale in India in 2023, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal received 15.56 lakh complaints up 24% from 2022. The Ministry of Home Affairs estimates 10,319 crore, which was lost to online financial frauds in one year.
The real number is expected higher as the experts estimate 80% Victims stay silent out of Shame or the belief police won’t do anything for a small amount .The astonishing fact is that ,Victims are not tech illiterate anymore ,Doctors ,professors ,retired bankers,Teachers,Lecturers ,even serving police people have lost money.
In J& K SSP Cyber police said in 2024, every day we get 30 to 40 calls regarding UPI Scam, Digital arrest scam etc ,where lacks of rupees are deducted from victims account. Cyber crime is Raising day by day due to total dependency on mobile phone, mobile phone are banks now fraud is organised & industrialized, awareness is still at don’t click unknown links level, where as criminals are using AI voice cloning & fake police uniforms on video calls.
The hard truth is that, cyber criminals are no longer lone hackers in hoodies. They are organized call centers with targets, scripts, and HR departments. They study human psychology better than most marketers do. Education alone doesn’t protect you, engineers, doctors, teachers and even police officers have lost lakhs. What protects you is mass awareness plus Habit.
The question is how cyber crime works, why people fall for it, and gives a complete safety framework to anyone who uses it against them.
The main types of Cyber Crime targeting Ordinary People ,by Phishing/Smishing,UPI/QR Scan
Digital Arrest ,Task/Investment Scam
Sextortion, APK Malware etc.
Phishing/ Smishing is a cyber fraud ,where criminals send fake SMS texts pretending to be banks, electricity boards, or delivery services. The message creates urgency ,KYC blocked, Power will disconnect and includes a link. Clicking it installs malware or steals OTPs, passwords, and money. Never click links, verify by calling the official number yourself.
UPI/QR fraud tricks users into sending money instead of receiving it. A scammer posing as a buyer says, Scan this QR to receive payment, but scanning actually approves a payment from your account. Banks never send QR codes to receive refunds. Remember, you scan QR codes only to pay, never to get money.
Digital Arrest is a scam where fraudsters impersonate police or CBI officers on video calls, claiming your Aadhaar or bank account is linked to crime. They isolate victims, threaten arrest, and demand money for verification. Real police never ask for transfers online. Hang up immediately and dial 1930 to report.
Task investment scams lure people via Telegram or WhatsApp with offers like Earn Rs 5,000 daily by liking videos. Initial small payments build trust, then scammers demand larger deposits to unlock tasks. After payment, they vanish. Legitimate jobs never ask you to pay money first. Always verify before investing.
APK malware spreads through fake Android app files shared on WhatsApp or SMS, like shaadi-card.apk or PM-Kisan.apk. Once installed, the app steals OTPs, SMS, contacts, and banking access, giving criminals full phone control. Only install apps from Play Store. Never download APK files from unknown links or messages.
Sextortion starts when strangers befriend victims online and trick them into sharing intimate photos or video calls, which are secretly recorded. Scammers then threaten to send the content to family unless money is paid. Never engage, save evidence, block the account, and immediatel call on 1930.
New type of frauds were observed in the year 2024–25, AI voice cloning ,which needs only 3 seconds of your voice from Instagram.
Your parents can get a call from you saying accident, send money.
Deep fake video calls have started. The rule seeing is believing.
The question is how even smart People get Trapped. The Cyber crime is not a test of intelligence, it is a test of stress response. Criminals use four weapons, It’s human psychology to get impressed by any authority, A uniforms, RBI logo, or CBI officer video call,Our brain is wired to obey authority.
They create a kind of Urgency by saying,Your account will block in one hour. Under time pressure, the thinking brain shuts down.
Thy first try to isolate the victim by advising, Don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret investigation. This prevents you from cross-checking.
Now the game starts ,We gave you 500 profits, now deposit ,5,000 & You have won a lottery.
A KAS officer in J&K lost 22 lakh to digital arrest, because the caller knew his name, Aadhaar last 4 digits from leaked data, and kept him on video call for 6 hours without a break. A teacher somewhere in Jammu lost 12 lacks to cyber fraud .The lesson for all ,No one is too smart, not to be scammed. Only people with protocols are safe.
If every Indian family follows these three steps, 80% of frauds will fail. No money decision on a phone call, Real banks, police, or RBI never ask for money transfer on call. If you happen to face any such issue, just pause and hold on.
If they (unknown caller) say don’t disconnect, Dont follow their instructions blindly, just disconnect immediately.
A real officer will visit your home or send a written notice for any kind of investment, job offer lottery, wait 24 hours and tell atleast one family member because Scammers hate delay.
You should verify from your side, not theirs
by dialing 1930, India’s 24×7 Cyber Helpline ,better to Save it as Cyber Police Call before you send money
not after sending.
You should Call back officially, bank customer care, But Don’t dial the number the caller gave you.
It’s suggested that one should make a family safe word. If you get a call from son, daughter or any of the close family members, calling for help or money ask them about safe word. AI can’t know it.
If you happen to face such problem report it fast to cyber cell of Govt. Because Financial Freud if done / reported within 1 hour, banks can freeze the criminal’s account.
One should keep 80% money in an account with no UPI/debit card.
Always remember one thing, You scan QR only to pay ,You never scan to receive money . Banks never send QR for refund.
Better to use HDFC/SBI virtual debit card for online shopping It expires in 48 hours. For safety purpose, always keep three Passwords Viz, One for bank, one for email, one for social media. Never reuse it.
Check out how many SIMs are on your Aadhaar Lock unknown ones
For the purpose of social safety, think Before you Post any thing on social networking sites. Don’t share DOB, phone number , child’s school, travel plans publicly, because Scammers build your profile.
One should avoid Stranger video calls, especially for teens. Sextortion starts with Hi…. from a fake profile.
Don’t do net banking on the railway or cafe Wi-Fi,better to Use mobile data.
To aware family members,Once a month, show parents one scam video from YouTube Cyber Dost etc.
Do a mock call, you pretend to be the bank and see if they, (family members) give OTP.
As per RBI guidelines/Ruless, If you report within 3 days and you did not share OTP, the bank is dependable to return your money Speed refund
The 1930 awareness should be spread like 112. The time is now ripe to add cyber security a chapter in Class 6-10. It should be ensured every district has a cyber cell.
UGC has initiated national wide awareness campaign through every state/UT education Directorates, a cyber jagrukta devas which is continuously observed in every first Wednesday of every month and in morning assemblies of schools. Every Panchayats ,village should now train atleast one person to spread information / awareness about Cyber Cyber crimes by the way of Wall paintings, other means like Police video call by paisa maange to 1930 milao.
If you or anyone’s child is sextorted, support them to report, then to scold. Suicide is not the answer, dial 1930.
AWARENESS Is the Antivirus.. Technology will keep changing. Today it is APK files tomorrow it will be deep fake videos. But the criminal’s formula will stay the same. Create urgency plus win trust and then demand money
Your defense will also stay the same, Pause the urgency, check from your side, and protect & safeguard your habits.
A locked door doesn’t stop all thieves, but an unlocked door invites every thief. Lock your digital door today: save 1930, set UPI limits, and teach one family member.
The internet is a public street. Walk on it with the same alert you use in a crowded market. The police cannot stand behind every phone, but your common sense can
If you’re reading this while on a suspicious call, hang up now. Dial 1930. Then come back and share my write up with others that’s how we end cyber crime not with code, but with community.
