JAMMU, Jan 9: Senior CPI (M) leader and MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami today demanded that the pending wages of the daily wagers, casual labourers, need based and salaries of other temporary employees must be paid at the earliest as the workers have been facing severe hardships.
The daily wagers, casual, contractual, need-based, consolidated and adhoc employees working in different Government and semi-Government departments for long period are not being paid wages, he said in a statement, adding “most of these workers are paid only for two or three months annually that too on festivals as such they are living under sub-human conditions”.
He further said that the land-donors in PHE, R&B, PDD and I&FC by virtue of which various schemes have become functional have neither been engaged and whosoever is engaged is not being paid wages. “Mali-cum-Chowkidars having provided land for construction of Panchayat Ghars were appointed in 2014 but till date have not been paid salaries,” he added.
“It is deplorable that these people have been put to sufferings and Government seems least bothered about their plight. The Government has failed to evolve a mechanism wherein these workers will get their wages and salaries on time without any hassles”, Tarigami said, adding “over the years the Governments have been constituting Cabinet Sub-Committees/Committees headed by Minister/Chief Secretary to work out payment of wages and regularization of daily wagers, casual, need based, seasonal, contractual, CPWs, adhoc and consolidated but neither any concrete steps have been evolved/suggested so far to redress their plight nor any report has been submitted by the committees till date”.
He demanded that Government should immediately formulate a comprehensive wage and regularization policy of all temporary workers and ensure that these workers are paid their pending wages forthwith.
