SRINAGAR, Feb 12: Reiterating his call for debt relief to farmers who have suffered a lot in September floods, CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Elect Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has urged the Government of India (GoI) and Governor N.N Vohra to put in abeyance the recovery of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans from farmers till a final call is taken on their loan waiver.
In a statement issued here, Tarigami said that agriculture and horticulture sectors have suffered a huge setback because of devastating deluge in September last year and the farmers are not in a position to repay their loans raised against their farming land and orchards.
The CPI (M) leader stressed on the need to arrange a one-time waiver on specified amount of KCC in favour of those farmers and agriculturists who are not in a position to purchase fertilizers and pesticides for their farms and orchards.
The MLA urged Governor to take up the rural indebtedness with the RBI Governor so that a one-time remission of KCC borrowings is extended to farmers of the Sate. He said the one time waiver would benefit lakhs of families who are directly or indirectly under tremendous pressure from the banks ahead of closing of financial year. “The one time KCC loan waiver can be considered as one of the components of the relief and rehabilitation plan that can give a sigh of relief to the farming community,” Tarigami said while expressing deep concern over the losses suffered by farmers due to floods last year.
The CPI (M) leader said that the Union Government and Governor must prioritize speedy compensation to the farmers and apple growers who have suffered extensive damage due to floods and vagaries of weather. “One fails to understand why the State Government has forgotten the farming community and the people associated with the horticulture sector who have been the worst hit in floods. It becomes an obligation for the Government to come to the support and succor of the farmers and orchardists as they form the backbone of the State’s economy,” he added.
