Take adequate steps to save paddy belt of Suchetgarh: Tony

JAMMU, June 18: District Development Council (DDC) Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony today raised serious concern over the problems being faced by the farmers due to defunct lift irrigation system in the border belt of Suchetgarh.
The DDC member took up this issue with the Chief Engineer Irrigation and apprised him of the issues being faced by the farmers of border belt.
The DDC member along with officials Irrigation department conducted a tour of border belt and visited various villages wherein lift irrigation system has been defunct since long including Sai, Nikowal, Burejal, Devigarh and Beaspur.
He said that there is dire need to rectify the defunct lift irrigation system at these villages besides construction of Chak Dams as that would resolve the water crisis in the area thus providing great relief to the farmers who have already suffered a lot.
He appealed to the officials of Irrigation department to create channels for irrigation purposes which are pending since long. Besides, he also laid stress upon de-silting of D-17 canal coming from Kotli Jabowal to Sai and the same should be restored immediately.
Tony also appealed the Deputy Commissioner to sanction adequate funds to save the paddy belt otherwise if the same position continues for some more time; the day would not be far when people of Suchetgarh will give up the farming activity.
Among others who accompanied the DDC member included Soba Singh, Sarpanch Sarabjeet Singh, Sarpanch Shashi Kumar, Capt Kamal, Kuldeep, Bodh Raj and Chela Singh.
