SRINAGAR, July 9: The Food Safety Week organized to promote the importance of food safety among consumers and the important stake holders concluded at SKICC here today.
During this week, a number of activities, debates and seminars were organized across the Srinagar city with the active participation of students from different schools and other members of civil society. The events focused on the aspects of FSSA 2006 and highlighted the importance of food safety and hygiene, distribution, preparation and food storage at all levels.
Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies Nawang Rigzin Jora, who was chief guest on the occasion, threw light on food safety measures and said that such active campaigns should be held on regular basis as these kind of activities help in educating and sensitizing children, students and members of society about the importance of maintaining food safety and hygiene.
“There should be no compromise on food quality as it is directly concerned to the health which connects us to life. Despite the Food Safety Act in place many manufacturers and vendors are not complying with the directives and sell misbranded food but SMC as an implementing agency should ensure that such people are taken to task immediately”, he said.
He instructed hoteliers and other food business operators to ensure quality food and law will take its own course for those failing to show compliance. Mr Jora instructed SMC to conduct regular inspections of these items.
Divisional Commissioner Shailendra Kumar, Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development, Jeet Lal Gupta and Commissioner SMC Dr G N Qasba also spoke on the occasion.
The participation certificates were distributed among the students who showed their active participation in debates and seminars held during Food Safety Week.
Kothi Bagh School bagged first prize where as Biscoe School and Mallinson girls school and Burnhall School bagged second and third prize respectively.
