Taiwan stocks up; chip makers and tourism shares gain

TAIPEI, July 30:

Taiwan stocks rose 0.49 percent on Monday, with chip makers the top gainers, up 1.17 percent, and tourism shares up 0.8 percent on hopes for more business from China.

The Economic Daily newspaper reported that Taiwan and China are expected to expand the Chinese independent traveller scheme to four more cities on Aug. 28 and will hold a cross-straits tourism roundtable held next month.

The main TAIEX index rose 34.72 points to 7,159.21, after ending up 2.21 percent in the previous session.

Among chip stocks, TSMC gained 1.13 percent while electronics shares advanced 0.7 percent. Financial shares rose up 0.44 percent.

The Taiwan dollar was up by T$0.070 to trade at T$30.03.

Foreign investors were net buyers on Friday, bringing down their total selling to T$60.68 billion this month.  (agencies)
