SRINAGAR, May 30: Scores of sumo drivers today protested against the authorities for their failure to allot stand for passenger cabs operating from the city.
The drivers assembled at Jahangir Chowk and protested against the non-availability of stand for the passenger cabs operating from city to the western parts including Hyderpora, Chanapora, Nowgam, Chadoora.
The drivers suspended their services for several hours and blocked the traffic for fifteen minutes. They said that lack of a designated stand was hampering the vehicular movement and inconveniencing passengers.
Tamrez Ahmad, a driver, said the police was not allowing them to park vehicles anywhere in the city.. “Today, we had parked our cabs in vendors park here but police shoved us away. We have no place to park,” he said, adding that the vendors park was empty and they were using it as a temporary parking space.
Earlier they used to park their vehicles on roadsides, but the police were disallowing them now, “Earlier we used to park vehicles along roadsides but that is not permissible now. Nearly 200 vehicles that ply on different routes in Srinagar have no place to park,” a protestor said.
Meanwhile, the cab operators threatened suspension of service if their demands were not fulfilled.
