The UT of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a disconcerting surge of 12 percent in cybercrime registrations during the year 2022, as delineated by the recent findings from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In a discernible escalation from the preceding year, the region recorded 173 instances of cybercrime, contrasting with 154 cases in 2021. While there is a nationwide surge of 24 percent in cybercrimes, the worrisome issue for Jammu and Kashmir pertains to its low charge-sheet rate. The escalating incidences of cybercrime pose a grave and pressing concern that demands immediate and unswerving attention from the competent authorities. The disconcerting dismissal rates of cybercrime charge sheets further exacerbate the gravity of the situation, necessitating urgent intervention. The larger states and UTs have significantly outperformed in meeting their charge-sheet targets, underscoring the imperative for the JKP to scrutinise and address this disparity. While it is acknowledged that the Jammu and Kashmir Police grapple with multifarious challenges, including terrorism and narcotics, the imperative to accord due emphasis to combating cybercrimes cannot be overstated.
The exponential surge in cyber crimes demands a meticulous and comprehensive examination, underscoring the exigency for heightened public awareness. The imperative task at hand involves disseminating knowledge among the masses about the diverse strategies employed by cyber malefactors. It is incumbent upon the authorities to institute robust public awareness campaigns promptly. The populace, in turn, must exercise vigilance and resist succumbing to the allure of deceptive schemes orchestrated by criminals. Any semblance of suspicion emanating from calls or messages should either be disregarded or promptly reported to the relevant authorities. The Jammu and Kashmir Police must diligently scrutinise the prevailing situation, allocating sufficient personnel to investigate and conclusively address all reported cases. The onus lies on law enforcement to muster the requisite manpower and resources to tackle the burgeoning wave of cybercrimes effectively. In tandem, fostering a culture of heightened public vigilance and swift reporting should be integral components of the overarching strategy to counteract this evolving threat landscape.
