Case to be registered, investigations launched: ADGP

SRINAGAR, Nov 23: Police today raided MLAs’ hostel turned Sub-Jail at Maulana Azad Road in Srinagar where 33 political detainees are lodged and recovered 11 cell phones from them. A case is being registered and investigations will be conducted to find out how these phones were smuggled in.
Additional Director General of Police “Muneer Khan, told Excelsior that 11 cell phones were recovered from the Sub-Jail today from the detainees. He said that raid was part of regular anti- sabotage check.
The ADGP said that a case will be registered and investigations conducted as these phones have been used for many different things. He said that investigations will also find out as to how the detainees managed to smuggle these cell phone, inside the jail.
Khan said that MLAs’ hostel has been declared a Sub-Jail and jail manuals will have to be followed strictly. He added that the frisking was part of security drill and visitors will have to go through the proper security check before they are allowed inside.
The ADGP said that visitors will be allowed to meet inmates only on Wednesdays and Saturdays as per the jail manual.
It may be mentioned here that several cell phones were recovered from these detainees on Sunday during their shifting to MLAs’ hostel. There was scuffle between some of the detainees and the security staff during their frisking and checking of luggage.
There are 33 detainees in the MLAs’ hostel Sub-Jail. They include general secretary of National Conference (NC), Ali Mohammad Sagar, Naeem Akhtar of PDP, Chairman of Peoples Conference Sajjad Lone and bureaucrat turned politician Shah Faisal.
The detainees were accommodated in 33 rooms of the MLAs’ hostel and five rooms have been given to their security staff. The security around the MLAs’ hostel has been intensified after it was converted into Sub-Jail.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, IItija Mufti, who houses her mother’s twitter handle took to twitter and alleged that detainees are being humiliated. “Seems like manhandling detainees wasn’t enough, J&K Police on ADGs orders has raided MLAs’ hostel, Srinagar today and subjected detainees to humiliating frisking and checking. One assumes, certain J&K Police officers drunk on new found power are doing this to settle political scores”, she tweeted.
