Leh, June 21: On the second and concluding day of the Students Education Progra-mme being organised at St Peters High School Choglamsar, Dr Paul Denton of British Geological Survey, UK conducted sessions on seismology.
He delivered a lecture on the earthquakes, their origin and causes. He demonstrated through models various types of seismic wave propagation, status of knowledge on seismicity, recording of earthquakes and estimation of epicenter and magnitudes.
The students from various schools of the Leh district demonstrated of their own on the small seismographs and worked various exercises given to them on the seismological data.
Experiments on elastic rebound theory and generation of earthquakes were demonstrated by the students.
Dr Denton was assisted by Dr Sandeep Pandita, Yudhbir Singh, Naveen Hakhoo, Mateen Hafiz, Shveta, Neha, Shiv Jyoti, Waquar Ahmed and overseas students including Rosalie, Ashima, Beth Geen, Celia and Katherine.
In the afternoon session students were given exercises on scientific methodology and climate awareness survey by the IERT team.
Prof Bindra Thusu conducted interactive session with the students for their feedback concerning what they learnt for the last two days.
The valedictory session was chaired by Jonathan Craig, Vice President, Exploration and Production, Eni Milan in which Poster presentation awards were given.
First award was won by Stanzin Norboo, while Skarma Dzakhim Dzom Jigmet Norboo bagged second and thirs prizes respectively.
In addition three consolation prizes were given to Stanzin Stobdan, Mipham Jigmet and Stanzin Laskit.
Later, in the evening, the students of St Peters School presented a cultural show in the evening.
