Srinagar, May 22: Students of several educational institutes today staged protests and pelted stones on security forces during which at least eight of them were detained.
The students of all-boys Sri Pratap Higher Secondary School (SPHSS), which re-opened after two weeks today, at Maulana Azad Road here in city centre again boycotted their classes and staged protests against the State. The students amid sloganeering tried to march towards Lal Chowk from their institute but police who were additionally deployed outside the SPHSS intercepted them. The police urged the students to return to classes which latter refused and pelted stones on cops.
Police retaliated by firing fewer smoke shells towards students and also chased them to restore the order. There was brief standoff between the students and police during which both sides pelted stones on each other. The police while chasing down the students detained three of them. They were detained in local police station and are being questioned. The police unlike past weeks managed to contain situation instantly.
The students of Gandhi Memorial College and MPML Higher Secondary School at Bagh-e-Dilawar Khan in downtown city engaged police in pitched battles after staging protests. The police fired several teargas canisters towards the students, who, however, refused to budge and continued pelting stones. With the help of its men in civvies, police detained at least five students during stone-pelting at Bagh-e-Dilawar Khan.
The students of Government Higher Secondary School Palhallan along National Highway in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district took to streets this morning and staged protests. The students attempted to march towards Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway but were prevented by police by firing some teargas shells. There was brief standoff between the two sides and later situation returned to normal.
Police said barring four educational institutes, the situation in rest of the schools and colleges was normal throughout the day and routine teaching work took place peacefully. After yesterday’s shutdown and restrictions, the normal life across Kashmir resumed today.
Meanwhile, the police sounded an alert in Southern Kashmir after an Alto car bearing registration number JK13A/611 was stolen from the parking of Pulwama District Hospital today. It was not immediately known who is behind the incident but police have alerted its men and are looking for the car.
