Strike on Guru’s death anniversary

Srinagar, Feb 9: Normal life was disrupted in Kashmir due to a strike called by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on the seventh death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar jail on this day in 2013.
The low speed mobile internet services were again suspended today as a precautionary measure, to maintain law and order in the Valley. However, it was restored in the evening after there was no untoward incident in Kashmir.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in response to strike called by JKLF. The weekly Sunday market – three-km-long road stretch between Radio Kashmir and Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) in Srinagar- was deserted, with only security forces deployed to maintain law and order.
However, some private vehicles, besides three-wheelers and cabs, could be seen plying in the Civil Lines and Moulana Azad road.
Security forces were deployed in full strength in parts of Kashmir to prevent any protests.
Similarly, hundreds of security forces and police personnel were deployed in other major towns of North Kashmir, including Sopore, the hometown of Guru, to prevent any protests.
