It is quite imperative that stocking of essential items in twin districts of Ladakh – Leh and Kargil is done on priority basis as it is during these 2-3 months the road connecting Leh with Srinagar remains open. Afterwards, the road gets closed for six months.
It has been experienced that inadequate stocking particularly of petroleum products in the past has caused immense inconvenience to people here. It may be mentioned here that the number of vehicles operating in Ladakh division has increased considerably during the last decade.
The number of petrol pumps that function here do not meet this required demand. These petrol pumps usually get exhausted one or two months before the road is again opened for vehicular movement. So is the case with LPG. People have started discarding conventional chullahas for cooking purposes, and they now use gas stoves. Therefore demand for adequate supplies of LPG have further increased.
So it is essential that more petrol pumps be opened in this part of the world. Only then adequate quantities of petro-products can be stocked for use in winter months.
