The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, a premier medical institution in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, finds itself embroiled in a concerning situation. Post Graduate (PG) and Senior Resident doctors, the backbone of the hospital’s healthcare delivery system, are facing months-long delays in receiving their stipends and salaries. This not only creates financial hardship for these young doctors but also raises questions about the administration’s priorities and its commitment to its staff’s well-being. The doctors’ plight is particularly worrisome considering their workload. They dedicate themselves to long hours of patient care, often the first point of contact for those seeking medical attention. Their delayed compensation throws their financial stability into disarray, impacting their morale and potentially hindering their ability to perform their duties effectively.
The excuse of “lack of funds” seems particularly hollow when juxtaposed with the timely payment of salaries for other staff members. This disparity in treatment breeds resentment and the fact that PG residents at other institutions receive their stipends on time and at higher rates adds insult to injury. This discrepancy violates National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines, which mandate equal pay for PG residents across the state. The threatened “harsh steps” by the doctors, which could potentially disrupt crucial healthcare services, are a symptom of a deeper malaise. The administration needs to take immediate action to address the issue. Releasing the pending stipends and salaries should be the top priority. Additionally, a transparent and sustainable solution for timely future payments needs to be implemented. Timely compensation is not just a financial matter, it’s a recognition of the valuable service these doctors provide. The GMC Administration must prioritize the well-being of its PG residents and Senior Residents. A well-compensated and motivated workforce is essential for maintaining the high standards of care that the institution is known for.
