ST Commission reviews status of development programmes

SRINAGAR, Aug 1: National Scheduled Tribe Commission Chairman, Dr Rameshwar Oraon, today held a meeting with Chief Secretary Madhav Lal to review the status of implementation of development programmes, recruitment policy and safeguards concerning scheduled Tribes of Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was attended by Members of NSTC Kamla Kumari and B. Meena, Joint Secretary NSCT Aditya Mishra, Principal Secretary Home, B. R. Sharma, Principal Secretary Housing and Urban Development, Administrative Secretaries and other senior officers from Centre and State.
Expressing satisfaction with overall development measures initiated by the Government for the welfare of the tribal community, Dr. Oraon said that socio-economic developmental gaps should be reduced and tribals of J&K should get adequate representation in employment and other developmental programmes.
Dr. Oraon presented various observations for the consideration of the State Government. He said that during their visit to various districts they had interacted and met several tribal delegations, panches, sarpanches and local people belonging to schedule tribes who apprised them about various issues concerning the community.
Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare Jeet Lal Gupta gave a detailed presentation on status of schedule tribes in the State, special fund allocations for their development and welfare programmes taken for the community.
The meeting discussed issues concerning shifting population of Gujjar and Bakerwals, opening of mobile schools for tribals, addressing health concerns and opening of nursing schools for tribal girls, monitoring of recruitment and promotion of STs, financial support under various schemes, timely and regular distribution of scholarships etc.
It was informed that a tribal research centre is coming up at Leh and 3 tribal cultural centres will be established each at Jammu, Kupwara and Poonch. In addition to 13 boys and 3 girls hostels for students belonging to tribal communities, 5 new hostels at Mahore, Basanatgarh, Handwara, Kargil and Udhampur are coming up. The State has already created a post of Director for Tribal Affairs who monitors various scholarship schemes, training programmes, and other matters concerning tribal population.
