SSH to start renal transplant surgeries next month

Srinagar, July 19: After getting the necessary clearance for conducting the renal transplant surgeries, the Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) at Shireen Bagh, Srinagar is all set to conduct the first such procedure next month.
Officials told Excelsior that the hospital was going to conduct the renal transplant surgeries on July 15-16, but due to some issues which the patients faced, the same could not be carried out.
“Four were scheduled for renal transplantation this month, 2 have got it done from SKIMS, while we now have two more that will undergo the transplantation in the next month. We had already made all the arrangements, however, due to some issues the same was not conducted; we are now ready to do it next month,” Head of the Department of Urology, Dr. Syed Sajjad Nazir told Excelsior.
The officials said the patients who will go for the renal transplant surgeries, their cases will be assessed by the authorization committee and that the necessary clearance will be first given by the committee before they are actually taken up for transplantation.
For the patients, the procedure is going to be free of cost and will be carried out under the PMJAY Sehat scheme which will cover all the costs of the surgery and the post-operative management.
“It is almost going to be free while as under the PMJAY Sehat scheme, the patients will get a package of Rs 4.5 lakh; donor and recipient will get Rs 2.5 lakh each and concerning the drugs, they will get Rs 50,000/- for 3 months, then again, Rs 50,000/- for 3 more months and then 40.000/- for another 3 months for immunosuppressant drugs which they will need,” the officials said.
To begin with, as per officials, a team from Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre Mumbai will be carrying out the renal transplant surgeries, which is as per the guidelines, while the hospital staff will be assisting them.
“After a few surgeries, the entire setup will be handed over to the hospital staff; we can do it ourselves, but as per the rules, the team will have to conduct it initially,” the officials said.
The department of Nephrology and Urology has got 8 and 15 specialists respectively apart from other assisting staff along with the machinery necessary for conducting such surgeries.
“There is separate staff for conducting such surgeries while as there is the availability of state of art machinery and equipment enough to handle two patients who undergo renal transplant surgeries; it is all more than enough while as we have fulfilled all the gaps that were identified earlier,” the officials said while appealing those in need not to go outside J&K and spend lakhs on such procedures and utilize the facilities available at the hospital.
