JAMMU, Oct 2: In another first of its kind surgery, holes in the heart of a 6- year old child was repaired in the Deptt of CTVS, Super Specialty Hospital, under GMC Jammu through minimal access method, with a small 7 cm incision in the front area of right side of chest wall.
This is a novel technique in which heart was not stopped to carry out the repair of holes in the heart and the procedure was carried out while the heart was continuously beating.
There are only few Cardiothoracic centres which fix the holes in heart on beating heart remarked the chief surgeon, Dr Shyam Singh , who has two decades of experience in conducting these procedures.
The patient was sitting up and having tea after few hours after surgery. The technique gives very good cosmetic results besides short hospital stay. The amount of blood, and painkiller drugs required are also less as compared to conventional procedure which is performed by splitting breast bone and making the heart still.
The new technique was carried out using the same set of equipment and instruments as for conventional surgery without adding to the cost. All the expenses of consumable and other drugs used were covered under Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
This child was repeatedly having chest infections needing admissions to the Paediatric department. The surgical team comprised of Dr Shyam Singh, Dr IA Mir, Dr Arvind Kohli , Dr Mohit Arora & Dr Vivek Gandotra.
Cardiac Anaesthesia was conducted smoothly by Professor and Head Dr Puja Vimesh, Dr Rasmeet Kour and Dr Vikas, assisted by senior Cardiac Anaesthesia technologist Vikas Sharma , Arif and Sumit.
The most important job of running the Cardiopulmonary pump machine was conducted by senior Perfusionists Chananjit Singh and Roshan Lal.
Principal Medical College Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudhan while visiting the patient congratulated and applauded the team effort & urged the CTVS Deptt to strive to achieve excellence so that patients do not have to go out for any cardiac surgeries.
