SRINAGAR, Oct 15: The residents of Umarabad Sector-A area of Peerbagh in Srinagar are facing a severe scarcity of drinking water for last two months owing to an unfinished pipeline.
The residents lamented that they are facing the worst water crisis for the last two month due to an unfinished waterline connecting the area. “Water pipeline connecting the area from house number 90, lane number 5, was left unfinished in the month of March this year due to COVID-19. This unusual water shortage is making our fight against COVID-19 harder,” the residents of the area said. They said that the shortage has made them vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic as people are compromising the precautionary measures in meeting the challenge.
The residents said PHE Department has failed to provide piped water to the area despite direction from the Government. “Responding to the complaint which we filed at the Governor Grievance cell, the Government directed the department to take necessary actions. But the department was unmoved,” the residents said.
The locals were referring to a reply of the Lt. Governors cell in which the concerned advisor asked the department to take prompt action. “The subject was presented in the grievance cell of the advisor (B) to the Honorable Lieutenant Governor in civil secretariat Srinagar. In this connection, the undersigned is directed to request you to take immediate necessary action in the case, on priority,” the reply of reads.
When approached, assistant executive engineer PHE, Shayeq Peerzada, said that the work on the pending part would start soon. “Once the pipe material arrives we will start the work,” he said.
Asked about the delay in the culmination of the pending part, he said: “We had finished the allotted work. There was no allotment beyond that point, but that has been solved now. We have received the allotment. Plus some locals objected, and that restricted us, but they have been taken into confidence now.”
