Born on February 7, 1993 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Srikanth Kidambi is an Indian Badminton player. He trains at Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy alongwith other Indian players like Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta etc. His full name is Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi. The gritty shuttker placed 9th in Badminton Junior World Championship 2011 in men’s singles. He won his first major competition in 2011, when he claimed men’s doubles at junior national. In adults, he won bronze in men’s singles in 2012. He started playing small-scale international tournaments alongwith nationals in 2012. In the year 2012, Kidambi won first major tournament ‘Maldives International’.
He came into lime light when he stunned World No 4 Bonsak Ponsana to win Thailand Open 2013. He also reached finals of 2014 Indian Open Grand Prix Gold but lost to Xue Song to finish runners-up. He recently reached the semifinals of 2014 Singapore Open after stunning top seeded players in quarters and pre-quarters, before losing a hard fought match against World No 1 Lee Chong Wei by (21-19, 21-18). He is currently second highest ranked after P Kashyap. He is emerging as a new young talent at World stage. He plays for Awadhe Warriors in Indian Badminton league. His brother K Nandagopal is also a badminton player.
