Sports in schools

Sir,
This pertains to the inadequate importance given to games and sports in comparison to academics in our country as a result of this our achievements in the international arena are not quite satisfactory. If, we take an example of an average Indian child, there are not such facilities which particularly focus on the importance of sports. We don’t have open spaces left for our children for sports and games. Most of schools do not provide good athletic tracks and playgrounds for budding sports boys and girls. So, how can we expect such students to aspire for excellence in any sport?
It has been observed that 98 percent of parents only focus on academics rather than sports and games. They are only interested to make their wards excel in academics. Sports and games are not given much importance. If a child develops his/her interest towards sports and insists his/her parent to make such facilities available but, parents do not give much stress on this issue and consider it as the wastage of time and money. Lack of basic facilities like as playgrounds, sports kit and game equipments etc is also one of the reasons which needs to be provided in all Government and private institutions. Similarly, experienced coaches right from Primary to Middle standards in all Government as well private institutions be made available for proper coaching and upliftment of sports. Otherwise, we may not be able to produce players like Sachin Tendulkar, Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza etc in coming times. We should encourage our students to take up sport as their future career. Sports scholarships in schools, higher secondary schools and colleges to all deserving students can be helpful in this regard. Our pampered cricket players earn ten times more than sportsmen in hockey, football, volley ball and other disciplines. The Govt should be fair to promote all sports. Let’s start from the schools and aspire for medals in the Olympics.
