3 militants trapped in Budgam village

Srinagar, Mar 4: A Special Police Officer (SPO) and a civilian were killed while a policeman was injured in a militant attack at Warpora area of Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district this evening.
Militants opened fire upon the police party near Warpora police post. These cops were in civvies and were fired upon by militants killing an SPO on the spot. He has been identified as SPO Wajahat Ahmad Bhat son of Asadullah Bhat of Wagoora Kreeri.
Another police man, Showkat Ahmad Khanday of Wagoora Kreeri, and a civilian Umar Subhan, 22, of Warpora were injured in the attack. The civilian Umar Subhan succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The injured cop, Khanday, has been referred to Srinagar for treatment.
Senior Police officers reached to the spot, the area was cordoned off and searches launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack. However, no one was arrested.
In the meantime, a gun battle broke out in Chadoora area of Central Kashmir district of Budgam this evening.
Security forces including Army’s 53 RR and police launched a cordoned and search operation in Zenipora village of Chadoora in this evening after inputs about presence of a group of militants hiding in the village.
An official said that during the search operation, the hiding militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated, leading to a gunfight. The intermittent firing was going on in the evening and officials believe that they have trapped three militants in the village.
One Army personnel was injured in the gun battle and he has been shifted to hospital for treatment. His condition is out of danger.
They have strengthened the cordon and lit up the area to prevent militants from fleeing from the village. However, an official said that they had information about presence of three militants in the village and they might have fled from the cordon during the initial firing.
Security forces this year achieved major successes against the militants. This year there were 12 successful operations carried out against the militants by the security in Jammu and Kashmir in which 25 militants were killed. The security forces have also carried out successful operations against the Over Ground Workers of the militants and arrested around four dozen of them in recent months.
