SPG takes control of rally venues; DGP for strict checks on borders

JAMMU, Nov 4: A high level team of the Special Protection Group (SPG) headed by senior IPS officer T Namgial today held high level review of security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir for the one-day visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 7.
Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra held another review of security situation with heads of para-military forces, Army officials and top brass of police for the Prime Minister’s visit.
Official sources told the Excelsior that the SPG team headed by T Namgial, IGP, reached here from New Delhi and visited Baglihar hydro-electric project at Chanderkote in Ramban district, where Modi was scheduled to inaugurate three projects in the afternoon on November 7.
The SPG team has held one review of Sher-i-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar and will be holding two more reviews in the next two days before taking control of the stadium and Baglihar project, where the Prime Minister would address rally and inaugurate the projects.
The Sher-i-Kashmir stadium, where Modi will address first ever historic joint rally of PDP and BJP at 12.30 pm on November 7, has been sealed after examination by the SPG and was being kept under strict surveillance of the SPG commandos, para-military and police officials.
The areas surrounding the stadium have also been kept under surveillance and would be fully sealed a day ahead of the rally.
“The stadium will be surrounded by commandos of the SPG, police, para-military forces from all four sides up to a distance of at least one kilometer radius and, if required, more to ensure fool-proof security arrangements for first rally of Modi in the Kashmir as the Prime Minister, which is being organized jointly by PDP and BJP.
The Prime Minister is expected to announce a mega package for Jammu and Kashmir and some decisions pertaining to Kashmir.
Sources said Modi will inaugurate both the projects-Baglihar-Phase-II (450 mw) and four laning of Udhampur-Banihal stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway from Chanderkote, about one and half kilometers short of Baglihar project, in Ramban district. However, the inauguration of Shaheed Amarnath Skill Development Project at Baglihar hasn’t matured.
After inauguration of two projects, the Prime Minister will address local gathering of people at Chanderkote as the venue has capacity of accommodating only 4000 people.
Meanwhile, DGP K Rajendra also chaired high level security review meeting with Army, para-military Intelligence agencies and Jammu Police officials at the Police Control Room (PCR) here this afternoon and directed for intensified security arrangements at the rally venue and other places. He also reviewed security arrangements for the Durbar Move.
The DGP directed all security agencies to strengthen anti-infiltration grid along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) to ensure that the militants didn’t succeed to infiltrate into this side to create disturbances. He called upon them to maintain strict surveillance along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway also as Chanderkote, where Modi would inaugurate two projects and address a rally also falls on the highway.
Rajendra directed the SSPs of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts to maintain border management as entire International Border falls in these three districts and militants could attempt infiltration to carry out terror strikes.
