JAMMU, May 31: Over a hundred visually impaired and able-bodied judo athletes from across Jammu have appealed to the J&K Sports Council for the reassignment of their coach, Suraj Bhan Singh, back to MA Stadium, Jammu.
The athletes said the coach, who has been pivotal in training both sighted and blind judo players, was recently transferred to Udhampur district, leaving them without structured training for the past two weeks. An international-level visually impaired athlete emphasized that Suraj Bhan Singh is the only qualified coach in the Union Territory for blind judo players, and his absence has disrupted training for over 150 students.
Many of these athletes are currently preparing for prestigious national and international events, including the Asian Para Judo Championship, Youth Olympics, and the World Games, heightening concerns over the timing of the transfer. When contacted, Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull acknowledged the transfer, stating: “Transfer is part and parcel of the job. I urge all the athletes to utilize the services of specially trained coaches appointed at MA Stadium.”
