SRINAGAR, June 18: To overcome massive traffic jams in Srinagar city, Traffic Police today appealed motorists to abide the traffic rules for streamlining the movement of vehicles.
Superintendent of Police (City Traffic) Maqsood-ul Zaman told a news conference here: “The traffic situation is in a mess here but we seek cooperation from the motorists to streamline the traffic in the city.”
“The traffic jams in some parts of the city are due work on the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover but most of the snarls are due to impatience shown by the drivers. I appeal to one and all to be patient and avoid overtaking on lanes meant for traffic coming from opposite direction,”  the SP traffic said.
Zaman also warned motorcyclists not to ride their two-wheelers without a helmet. “Most of head injuries reported at tertiary care SKIMS hospital is of those bikers who were riding without helmet. As in other cases of violations, penal action will follow for two-wheeler riders from tomorrow,” he said.
On the overcrowding in passenger vehicles and school buses, the police officer said while the traffic cops will do their job, the commuters also have a social responsibility of not inadvertently helping the case of the transporters.
“Why do commuters climb the roof top of a passenger vehicle when there is another empty vehicle waiting right behind it? Let us take some responsibility as citizens of this place”, the SP traffic said.
“I have given three days to school van operators not to carry more than prescribed number of school children in their vehicles. Action will follow if anyone is found violating the norms henceforth,” Zaman said.
Zaman said Traffic Department and Regional Transport Office are coordinating to ensure that public transport is available on all routes at least till 8.00 pm.
The SP traffic said that no one would be allowed to park cars on roadside as it leads to traffic jams.
