JAMMU, Nov 12: All J&K Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) which had earlier decided to boycott the December 3 elections to four MLC seats under Panchayat quota will reconsider its decision in its meeting to be held here after two days.
The decision to review its earlier decision was taken by the organisation in the wake of a letter received by it from Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief and former Union Minister, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz today asking the Conference not to boycott the elections in the larger interests of democracy.
“We are in receipt of a letter from Prof Soz who appealed us not to boycott the elections as both the organizations fight for the same cause”, Shafiq Mir chairman AJKPC told Excelsior here. So the Conference decided to hold its meeting after two days to decide the future course of action, he added.
Mir said Prof Soz in its letter while appealing the AJKPC to review its earlier decision on poll boycott has maintained that though AJKPC members don’t belong to Congress yet both the organisations fight for the same cause. Appreciating the ideas of AJKPC in strengthening democracy in the State, the letter said that Congress is committed to enforcement of Indian Constitution’s 73rd Amendment in the State by incorporating it in J&K Panchayati Raj Act.
Mir said Prof Soz in his letter while lauding the AJKPC’s role also appealed its leaders to work together with Congress party in strengthening democracy in the State.
However, AJKPC which had earlier announced to boycott the elections till its demands are met has not given its response to the letter of JKPCC chief as yet and decided to take a decision in its meeting after two days.
AJKPC had earlier taken a strong exception to announcement of elections to four MLC seats under Panchayat quota and it had accused the Government of its total failure in empowerment of the Panchayats in the State and adopting a rigid stand over the implementation of Indian Constitution’s 73rd Amendment.
