Srinagar, May 6: The residents of North Kashmir’s Sopore area have been left unattended by the Government and the township faces multiple issues.
The residents told Excelsior that Sopore has been crippled by series of issues but alleged that the Government machinery seem to be unmoved. The residents’ allegations are substantiated by the fact that the post of Tehsildar is lying vacant since over a month while there is no permanent garbage dumping site for entire Sopore.
The post fell vacant after the then Tehsildar Sopore, Bilal Ahmad, retired from his service on March 31. Since then, the Revenue Ministry has not appointed new Tehsildar, resulting in extensive inconvenience to the people visiting Tehsildar office.
Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Yasha Mudgal, told Excelsior that she has taken up the matter with Revenue Ministry and as of now she is appointing incharge Tehsildar for the convenience of common people. The locals also said that the concerned authorities have not maintained the record of 1951 voter list and as a result people are facing hindrances with regard to getting Permanent Residential Certificates.
The issue of waste management has been a long time problem of Sopore. There is no permanent garbage site for Sopore and locals said the garbage heaps are usually seen on streets. “Sopore stinks and government doesn’t seem to be bothered. The summer is approaching and there is grave threat of diseases,” said Sopore Traders’ Federation president, Muhammad Ashraf Ganai.
When Excelsior posed the question of garbage dumping site to DC Mudgal, she said: “The issue of garbage dumping site would be sorted out shortly. A site is under consideration and we will soon finalize it.”
The Traders’ Federation president said that the other issues which Sopore residents are facing include poor BSNL phone and data services.
Ashraf Ganai said that the link roads of Sopore are not macadamized and are in dilapidated condition. Besides, he said, the water pipe lines are in shambles while the street lights are defunct. “The basic amenities are right of the people but Sopore has been ignored by all regimes but we are being discriminated,” said the Traders’ Federation president.
