Soldier martyred, militant killed in Shopian

Jammu, Aug 2 : A soldier was martyred and a militant killed in an encounter at Ittoo Mohalla Pandushan area of South Kashmir’s Shopian today.
A fresh exchange of fire resumed at the encounter site, a day after security forces cordoned it off following inputs about presence of militants.
One militant was killed in the encounter. A soldier who was injured was immediately taken to army hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries. The operation was going on in the area till late tonight.

Meanwhile, youth took to streets and pelted stones on forces near the encounter site. The police and paramilitary CRPF deployed in the area used tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse them.
One Sahil Ahmad of Chogalpora Shopian sustained pellet injury in his left eye. He was immediately taken to district hospital Kulgam for treatment where from he was referred to SMHS Srinagar for specialized treatment.
On Thursday evening, the encounter broke out at Ittoo Mohalla Pandoshan village after a joint team of Army’s 34 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation.
In the meantime, an Army vehicle of 55 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) was targeted with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Zahid Bagh village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district in wee hours today.
A vehicle of 55 RR was targeted with IED that was planted along the road in Zahid Bagh area, causing damage to the vehicle. The loud bang of the IED followed by firing created panic in the area but there was no loss of life or injury.
