Snowfall in higher reaches, Valley lashed by rains; temp drops

Srinagar, Apr 22: Higher reaches of Kashmir including world famous ski-resort, Gulmarg, experienced fresh snowfall today while the plains received moderate rainfall, bringing down the temperature further across the Valley.
The tourist destinations including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Gurez and other higher reaches too have experienced fresh snowfall. Gulmarg received over half a feet of fresh snow today.
Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for vehicular movement after Zojila and its adjoining areas received fresh snowfall.

Several higher reaches of Kashmir including Zojila Sonamarg Gund Kullan have received fresh snowfall today.
In view of fresh snowfall at Mani Marg, Drass and Zojila, the authorities suspended the vehicular movement on Srinagar-Leh highway as a precautionary measure.
The Bandipora-Gurez road was also closed after snowfall at Razdan Pass.
The Valley including Srinagar received rainfall since morning till evening today making people shiver as temperature across the region dipped.
The heavy rains led to the waterlogging in several areas of Srinagar especially low lying areas. In some areas, the SMC was seen draining out the water.
The water level in rivers and streams has also increased but the majority of them are flowing below the danger mark.
Chief Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department, Iftikhar Ahmad Kakroo said that there was no threat of floods in Kashmir, saying that the water in the river Jhelum and other tributaries was flowing below the flood alarm mark.
The drop in the temperatures has badly affected the orchards where there is bloom these days. The orchardists fear that the low temperatures will have a huge impact on the crop.
Deputy Director MeT, Mukhtar Ahmad said that the prevalent weather conditions as per the forecast would continue till late evening today following which it would start improving gradually.
Ahmad said that there is no forecast of rains till April 30 and it is expected that the weather would remain mainly dry till then.
The night temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 8.6 degree Celsius while the tourist resort of Gulmarg was the coldest at minus 0.5 degree Celsius.
