SMVDU Researchers present Genetics study of AI Scoliosis in India

JAMMU, Mar 14: Hemender Singh and Dr Swarkar Sharma, Researchers from School of Biotechnology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, participated in the 23rd Annual Convention of ADNAT and International Conference with theme “Translating human evolutionary history to precision medicine”, organised at Banaras Hindu University, from March 10 to 13, 2023.
The conference witnessed the participation of 310 delegates across 17 states of India and 20 International speakers from 13 different countries with a total of 40 invited lectures and 70 poster presentations of high standards.
Hemender Singh presented his Ph D research work, carried out under the supervision of Dr Swarkar Sharma and Dr Ekta Rai at SMVDU. The work is the first ever genetic study of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (a spinal disorder), in India and has shown the association of Developmental and Bone Morphogenetic pathway genes with the Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis pathogenesis.
Based on his research work, expert panel selected Hemender as one of the candidates for the prestigious Dr P M Bhargava Award for the conference. He has also won the first prize in poster presentation in the conference.
Dr Swarkar Sharma delivered his invited talk on the theme of precision medicine and extensive work of the Human Genetics Research Group (HGRG) in population of Jammu and Kashmir. In his talk, Dr Sharma emphasized on the gaps in the genetic studies in the Jammu and Kashmir in light of limited resources and trained manpower in region. He shared the indigenously developed research designs by HGRG to overcome these challenges and facilitate genetics research with objectives of precision medicine in the region. He also shared online open access database at www.jkdna.in the group he has created, for the use of researchers, scientists and clinicians globally, for utilizing human genomics data for healthcare research and benefits of humankind.
