KATRA, May 7: A team of students from the School of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), has earned national acclaim by winning 1st position in the Innovation Challenge Track and securing the 3rd overall position in the IEEE YESIST12 2025 Prelims.
The team also received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 for their outstanding performance. Team named “Major”, consisting of students of B Tech (ECE)-6th semester, Harsh Raj (Team Leader), Amit Kumar Amar, Aman Singh & Nitesh Kumar Dubey and mentored by Prof Sumeet Gupta, presented their project “Gesture Speak”, which is an assistive hardware innovation that utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to translate sign language into spoken words, significantly improving communication for deaf and mute individuals.
The solution was praised for its technical depth and potential social impact. Their success in the prelims has earned them a spot in the IEEE YESIST12 2025 Grand Finale, which will be hosted in Malaysia, where they will represent SMVDU on a global stage.
Prof Pragati Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU lauded the performance of the students and hoped that the team will compete successfully at the international level. Dr Anil Bhardwaj, Head, School of E&CE commended the student team for their hard work, innovation, and dedication.
