KATRA, Dec 6: A high-risk cervical spine surgery of a 75-year-old woman from Anantnag, who had been struggling with debilitating neck pain and progressive weakness in her arms, was today conducted at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Katra.
For months, simple daily tasks had become impossible for the elderly patient. With hope fading, they reached SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital for a final consultation.
A detailed evaluation revealed severe compression of the cervical spinal cord, which was rapidly worsening her condition.
The complex case was led by Dr Khushwant Singh, Consultant, Spine Surgery, supported by the hospital’s neurosurgery team.
Despite significant risks due to her age and the extent of compression, the team concluded that surgery was her only chance at regaining mobility.
The doctors performed a meticulously planned cervical spinal decompression and stabilization procedure.
The surgery was successful, and the patient showed gradual but steady improvement.
Speaking about the case, Dr Khushwant Singh said, “Age alone should not limit treatment options. With the right expertise and advanced technology, even complex and high-risk spine conditions can be treated safely.”
Dr M M Mathavan, facility Director, said, “The case highlights the trust people across the region place in the hospital. Earlier, many patients had to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir for advanced spine care. Today, they receive the same level of treatment right here in Katra.”
The success story also underscores the contribution of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in building world-class healthcare infrastructure.
The hospital’s modern facilities and specialist services are bringing advanced medical care within reach for patients across Jammu and Kashmir.
