KATRA, May 20: Doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital saved the life of a 55-year-old patient from Udhampur who was suffering from a severe heart infection, respiratory failure and collapsed lungs.
The patient was referred from a private hospital in Jammu in a critical condition on ventilator and inotropic support. Doctors diagnosed him with Aortic Valve Endocarditis with Severe Aortic Regurgitation, a life-threatening infection affecting the heart valve. His condition was further complicated by severe lung infection and respiratory distress.
He was admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit where doctors initiated aggressive treatment and critical care support. As his condition worsened, the Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery team decided to perform an emergency high-risk surgery despite a predicted mortality risk of nearly 95.8 percent.
The patient underwent emergency Aortic Valve Replacement along with Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) under cardiopulmonary bypass support and insertion of an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP). The surgery was successfully performed by Dr Vinod Bhan and Dr Romil Dutt Sharma, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeons.
After prolonged ICU care, ventilator support, tracheostomy and treatment for multidrug-resistant infections, the patient gradually recovered and was discharged in stable condition breathing normally on room air.
