VARANASI, Oct 3:
Women and Child Development minister Smriti Irani on Saturday condemned the politics over Hathras gangrape-murder case and said the Yogi Government had set up an SIT to go into the issue and action would be taken once its report was submitted.
Assuring justice to the grieving family of the Hathras victim, she said “I am confident that the Yogi Government will take full action against the guilty,” she told a press conference here, adding that “I myself have spoken to the CM and he has set up an SIT and dismissed the Superintendent of Police.”
Taking on the Opposition over what she called “selective political outrage”, the WCD Minister said “People are aware of Congress’ tactics and that is why they ensured a historic win for BJP in 2019 polls. People understand that their visit to Hathras is for their politics and not for justice to the victim” referring to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Hathras.
The public, she said, “understands that his (Rahul Gandhi) journey towards Hathras is for politics and not for justice.”
Asked about the spate of rape cases, Ms Irani said though the Nirbhaya fund was set up in 2013, not a single rupee had been distributed to the state governments by the previous government. It was the Modi Government that had given Rs 9,000 crore to the states out of the Nirbhaya funds, besides setting up a women help desk, one stop crisis in 2017 and anti-trafficking units in all districts, she pointed out.
