MOHALI (PB), June 17: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali have successfully removed a small football-sized 3.70 kg fibroid tumor from the uterus of a 30-year-old woman via an open myomectomy, recently.
Fibroid in uterus is the most common gynecological disorder in women these days. They can manifest in heavy menstrual bleeding, painful menstruation, irregular bleeding and painful intercourse. If left untreated, fibroids can get enlarged and lead to pressure on surrounding structures, causing a host of other problems.
Giving details, Dr Kamna Nagpal, Associate Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali said that the patient reached Max in a critical stage. She was recommended urgent MRI test to get clarity on her situation.
“Reports showed many tumors with a huge tumor of ‘small football-size’ in her uterus weighing 3.70 kg. The decision was taken to do open myomectomy. As the patient was unmarried, preserving the uterus was of utmost importance in this case,” she added.
Explaining about the case, Dr Nagpal said , “It was a difficult case as removing large tumors like this one there was biggest challenge to control bleeding that can lead to hysterectomy in patient. The case became critical due to negligence on the patient’s part as she avoided surgery for 2-year and was taking homeopathic medicines in hope of cure.”
“After diagnosing the case, we took an urgent decision for surgery and after 3-hr of complex surgery, multiple tumors were finally removed with the largest single one being about 20cm x 25cm and weighing around 3.7 kg. While doing the surgery we also had to keep in mind the complications which can arise later in her life during pregnancy, Dr Nagpal asserted.
This kind of surgery is very critical due to massive Hemorrhage and might develop risks such as weakness in the body and hysterectomy post-surgery. But the patient showed no major signs of complications and after 7 days of good post-operative care she recovered and was discharged.
