SKUAST organises training program for farmers

SAMBA, Mar 14: Under DBT funded Project entitled, “Exploit-ation of existing bio-diversity for sustainability and farm profitability under rainfed agriculture” SKUAST-JAMMU,  organized  one day  farmers’ training programme on water harvesting at village Satuh, in district Samba today.
The objective of the programme was  to sensitize the farmers about importance of water harvesting in agriculture in the days to come. About eighty farmers from this area  participated in the training programme.
Sagir Ahmed, JRF, DBT Project welcomed  Sarpanch Ranjit Singh, other villagers  and scientists of SKUAST-Jammu  attended the programme.
Dr Meenakshi Gupta, PI  Project while speaking on the programme highlighted various benefits which could be accrued by water harvesting. She demonstrated it by showing the water harvesting pond at the farmer’s field. The harvested water could be used for giving life saving irrigation to the crops as well as to fruit trees during drought period.
Dr Rajeev Bharat, Jr. Scientist, Agronomy explained various scientific techniques of growing mustard and other oilseeds under Kandi areas. He also stressed the farmers to adopt crop rotation and use of organic manures.
Dr Sarab Deep Kour, Asstt Professor, Soil Science, briefed the farmers about the importance of soil testing and also explained the scientific methods of taking soil samples from the fields and orchards. Dr Arti Sharma, Asstt  Professor, Fruit Science explained scientific techniques of growing fruit trees best suited for Kandi areas. Manoj Kumar, SA, IMD, discussed about the changing climate scenario and its remedial measures.
Parveen Singh, Panch, Satuh, stressed the farmer to take advantage of such programme.  Dr Charu Sharma, RA, NICRA presented vote of thanks.
