SKUAST-J organizes programme on ‘Climate Change in Agriculture’

JAMMU, Mar 16: One-day farmers awareness programme on “Climate Change in Agriculture” was conducted by the National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (AICRPAM-NICRA) of SKUAST Jammu in collaboration with CRIDA, Hyderabad at village Sherpur, Dyalachak, in Kathua district.
Farmers from Sherpur and nearby villages took part in the programme, objective of which was to make the participants more self-reliant in dealing with weather and climate issues that affect agricultural production  and to increase the interaction between the farmers and the Agro Meteorological Advisory Service.
Dr Vivak Manohar Arya, the Principal Investigator of the project, explained the climate change/variability and its effect on agriculture.  He stressed that weather and climate are some of the biggest risk factors impacting on farming performance and management.
Dr P K Rai laid emphasis on key soil health indicators affected by climate change including SOM, carbon and nitrogen cycling, microbial biomass and activity, and microbial fauna and flora diversity. He indicated that climate change cannot be done without a better understanding and management of our soils.
Dr Sanjay Koushal stressed that farmers have to know the causes of the decrease in production and ways to tackle them.
Dr Charu Sharma stressed that weather and climate forecasting is just one of many risk management tools that play an important role in farming decision-making.
Dr Rajeev Bharat and Dr Devinder Sharma were among other scientists from SKUAST-J, present on the occasion, who briefed farmers about the impact of climate change on agriculture.
Rajeev Sharma advised the farmers to take advantage of such programs.
