SRINAGAR, Nov 15: Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh today reviewed security situation in Kashmir ahead of Panchayat elections and urged the troops to be prepared for meeting security challenges effectively.
Lt General Singh today arrived in the Valley to review prevailing security situation ahead of Panchayat elections that are being held from this week in phases.
The Army Commander stressed the need to be prepared for meeting the security challenges effectively.
Accompanied by the Chinar Corps Commander, Lt Gen AK Bhatt, the Army Commander visited the Army formations and units both in North and South Kashmir.
He was briefed by the Commanders on ground about the current situation and the recent operations that were conducted in the hinterland during which top commanders of militants were shot dead.
He was told that over 211 militants were killed in Kashmir this year during operations against terrorists which is highest in recent years and these include top commanders of the militant groups including Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. Eighty security force personnel and 70 civilians were killed this year in militancy related incidents.
The Army Commander complimented the troops for their recent successes and commended them for their dedication to duty and high standards of professionalism.
Lt General Singh was told that Army is following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in letter and spirit during the anti-militancy operations in Kashmir. He was told that despite provocations during the anti-militancy operations by the stone pelters and forces inimical to peace, security forces maintained utmost clam.
The Army Commander was told that troops on the ground despite hostile environment are trying to minimize the collateral damage.
Lt General Singh was appreciative of the measures and Standard Operating Procedures instituted by the units and formations to minimise civilian casualties.
Lauding the excellent synergy amongst all the security forces, the Commander exhorted all ranks to maintain a safe, secure and peaceful environment for the people of the Kashmir.
The Army Commander also visited the Srinagar Transit Camp wherein he was apprised about the security and administrative aspects for the transient Army personnel in the Valley.
