SRINAGAR, May 4: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has taken strong exception to the conversion of youth going on in different parts of the Kashmir valley. The Committee has said that the conversion goes against the rich cultural ethos of Kashmir.
In a statement, APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina said that the religious leaders of all the faiths should come forward and raise their voice against the issue of conversion. “People of a particular faith are being motivated to adopt a new faith while being offered money and other incentives,” Raina said.
“Sikhs in the past have rendered innumerable sacrifices in Kashmir and maintained the age old tradition of communal harmony. They have never allowed to exploit and harm the age old Kashmiriyat that exists in Kashmir. However, some of the missionaries are involved in religious conversion of Christians, Muslims and Buddhists by offering money, granting admission in charity institutions and jobs,” he said.
Raina asked the elements busy in conversion to rein in saying that otherwise the situation may get out of their hands. He said that more than 30 Sikh girls have eloped and some are kidnapped and later converted to other religions. He said that minorities can’t tolerate religious aggression and would oppose any such move.
“Heads of all the religions should come forward and not allow any sort of conversion by any means. Kashmir is an example in the world where brotherhood in the shape of Kashmiriyat is a unique example and it should be maintained at all cost. But for achieving this all the people more so the religious heads have to come forward and play their role,” said Raina.
