Significant reduction in Maternal Mortality Rate: Azad

NEW DELHI, Aug 29: Meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament attached to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on Maternal Health was held here today. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare presided over the meeting which discussed various issues on Maternal Health.
In his opening remarks, Mr Azad said Government of India is implementing a number of strategies and interventions for improved maternal health outcomes. These interventions have contributed in the reduction of Maternal Mortality Rate from 301 per 100,000 live births in 2001-03 to 254 in 2004-05 and further to 212 in 2007-09. The pace of decline has shown an increasing trend from 4.1% annual rate of decline during 2001-03 to 5.55 in 2004-06 and further to 5.8% in 2007-09.
Members who attended Consultative Committee Meeting included M.I. Shanavas (LS), Shailendra Kumar (LS), Dr. P. Venugopal (LS), Motilal Vohra (RS), Dr. C.P. Thakur (RS) and Baishnab Parida (RS).
Santosh Chowdhary, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare was also present in the meeting.
Anuradha Gupta, Addl. Secretary and Mission Director, NRHM made power point presentation on the strategies and interventions made by the Health Ministry on Maternal Health.
