Shutdown, protests in Shopian

SRINAGAR, Mar 6: Shutdown and protests continued for the second consecutive day today in Shopian district of South Kashmir against the killing of six persons, four of them civilians on Sunday evening.
Shops, business establishments, Government and private offices remained closed in parts of South Kashmir including Shopian and its adjoining areas. The public transport was off the roads in all these areas. However, private cars were plying on most of the roads in the Civil Lines area of the city and in North Kashmir. Shutdown was also observed in neighbouring Pulwama district.
Minor clashes were received from Memander, near DC office and near Mini Secretariat in Shopian today.
Meanwhile, people at Pahnoo today protested and demanded removal of an Army camp in the village.
As a precautionary measure, Government had closed all the schools and colleges in Kashmir valley while Kashmir University, JKBOSE and JKPSC postponed all exams scheduled till March 7.
Train service also remained suspended today and internet was snapped in twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama while as the mobile internet speed which was reduced yesterday morning has been restored to high speed elsewhere in Kashmir valley.
On Sunday evening, four civilians and two militants were killed in Army firing at Pahnoo village in Shopian district.
In the meantime, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who continues to be under house arrest in the backdrop of killings in Shopian  today said that the situation in Kashmir is extremely grim and fast deteriorating.
Mirwaiz said that rampant killings has become the order of the day.  He said as no responsibility is fixed for these killings and their is no accountability, the highly worrisome reality is that the lives of the people of Kashmiris is perpetually at great risk.
Mirwaiz said that the situation on the LoC and International Border is no better with civilians and soldiers dying on both sides and can anytime escalate into a full scale war.
