Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Kashmir loses 42,000 hectare agri land in 50 years’ DE Aug 24.
It is indeed a matter of great concern that people are converting agriculture land for commercial, and non-agricultural purposes. In Jammu, people have started commercial complexes and brick kilns on fertile agriculture land.
As a result, less land is available for agricultural purposes. Same is the case with Kashmir valley where people are converting huge tracks into orchards and residential purpose. New colonies are being set up on this fertile land. Instead of going for vertical expension, people opt for horizontal expension. Some portion of land is made available for constructing new roads and commercial complex.
If this trend is not reversed right now, the state will have no self – sufficiency in food items, and would, become dependent on imports which would entail a lot of revenue loss. It is time people think over the matter seriously before it is too late.
Yours etc….
