Srinagar, Sept 12: After the gap of 15 years, the elections for the four posts of Shopian Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association were held in mountainous district of Shopian in south Kashmir today.
The elections were held for the four posts which include president, vice-president, general secretary and treasurer. The elections were held after the gap of 15 years and there was lot of enthusiasm among the candidates and voters.
The Chief Electoral Officer Mohammad Ashraf said that eight candidates were in fray for four posts. He said that two candidates were in fray for each post. The election was held at Fruit Mandi Shopian.
Ashraf said that the incumbent president is facing Farooq Ahmad Khan in the polls. “Furthermore, Mohammad Yusuf and Ghulam Qadir Sufi are in fray for vice president post; Rayees Ahmad Khan and Bashir Ahmad Teli are fighting for the post of General Secretary while Shakeel Ahmad and Gulzar Ahmad are fighting for the post of Treasurer,” he said.
Ashraf said that the Association hopes that the new body would work for the empowerment and prosperity of fruit growers and would take up their issues with the authorities. The results of the polls would be declared tomorrow.
