Srinagar, Jan 21: Scores of residents from Nowgam Kothar village of South Kashmir’s Shangus area today protested here demanding the establishment of Women’s Degree College in the area.
The residents gathered at the Press Enclave here and raised slogans in favor of their demand. The protestors were carrying banner and placards that read “we want Degree College” and “we want justice.”
They alleged that the College meant for the Shangus constituency was diverted to the nearby Chatisingpora area due to political interference.
The protestors said they had been demanding the Degree College in their area for a long time, but authorities were least bothered about it. “Existing Degree College is in Anantnag, which is almost 28 kilometers away from the area. We are facing problems throughout the year, to reach the college,” a protestor said.
The protestors said that authorities were turning deaf ears towards their pleas. “For last two-three years, every day we are witnessing strikes and curfews, it is very tough for female students to reach home in the evening,” he said.
The protestors said that the area had all the required feasibilities, and blamed authorities for establishing the college at a less feasible area, “despite having the required criteria we are denied the college,” a protestor said.
Protestors appealed Governor Satya Pal Malik to look into the matter and fulfill their demand at an earliest.
