Sham directs engineers to expedite flood protection projects

JAMMU, Dec 10: In order to discuss and fast-track various flood protection projects in Akhnoor area, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma convened a high-level meeting of officers here today.
While reviewing the status of various flood protection projects conceived by the Department, the Minister stressed the need for close coordination between different agencies to sort out issues for their early sanction. He urged the CWC officers to clear all bottlenecks expeditiously so that these projects are sent to the Centre for sanction and funding. He directed the Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control to personally monitor the progress of these projects on day-to-day basis so that these are cleared at the earliest.
The Minister was apprised that 8 medium and one major flood protection projects with an estimated cost  of Rs. 2494 crore have been framed to channelize River Chenab and other nallahs which create flood havoc in the area and damages large chunk of fertile land every year in Akhnoor and adjoining areas.
The Minister directed the engineers to prepare DPRs of more such projects across the Jammu division to prevent the flash floods at vulnerable locations.
Commissioner/Secretary, PHE, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Director Central Water Commission (CWC), Vivek Tripathi, Chief Engineer, Ravi Tawi Irrigation Complex (RTIC), H.C. Jerath, Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sushil Aima, Superintending Engineer Hydraulic, Rajiv Malhotra, Joint Director Planning, Mr. Shabir Ahmed and other officers of Irrigation & Flood Control Department attended the meeting.
