Shaheen Colony road in Handwara in bad condition, people aghast

Srinagar, Feb 7: People of Shaheen Colony in north Kashmir’s Handwara are facing hardships due to the dilapidated condition of the road in the area even as they said that the concerned department has been turning a blind eye towards the issue for the last several years.
The locals said that commuting on the road has become difficult due to its bad condition even as several locals tried to fill the potholes on their own, but the condition of the road did not improve. They said that the road has never been repaired while it lacks a proper drainage system
An elderly person, Abdul Rehman, said that the length of the road is half a kilometre and acts as a link road to the main road and maintained that they have been subjected to official apathy.
“We have time and again brought the issue to the notice of the concerned officials who even told us that the money has been allotted for the work, but so far, the repair works have not been carried at all,” he said.
He added that they fail to understand that while the work has been even allotted, what is stopping the Municipal Committee from starting the works.
The locals are also alleging that the Municipal Committee officials never visited the area to take stock of the issues that people are facing.
“People are hardly able to walk on the road, it is full of mud. We tried to fill the potholes, but that did not work. The concerned officer of the MC has not even visited the area for long,” said an aggrieved lady.
She said that people for whom the road is the only way of connectivity are suffering. “People are forced to trespass through lawns of people’s houses living along the road to reach the other side; such is the condition and despite that, the concerned officials have not so far taken any note of it,” she said.
When contacted, the Chairman of Municipal Committee Handwara Masroor Banday told Excelsior that the work of the road has been tendered out and the necessary works shall commence soon. He, however, said that he was not aware of the amount of funds that has been allocated for the work.
