JAMMU, Apr 7: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah who is on a three days tour of J&K discussed the prevailing situation in the Jammu and Kashmir with top Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP leaders here, this afternoon.

According to sources, a closed door meeting was held at the official residence of BJP Legislature Party Leader (LOP), Sunil Sharma at Gandhi Nagar which was attended by top Sangh and BJP leaders from the UT.
Sources said the meeting besides LOP, Sunil Sharma was also attended by RSS Prant Pracharak, Mukesh Kumar, its Prant Sangchalak, Gautam Mengi, Seh Sang Chalak, Dr Vikrant, president Sanatan Dharam Sabha (SDS), Parshotam Dadichi, RSS Prant Karivah, Avtar Krishan Trakroo, BJP president, Sat Sharma and party general secretary (Org), Ashok Koul.
Sources said detailed discussions were held on varied issues confronting the J&K UT. The spurt in terror activities especially in Jammu region dominated the discussions and Sangh activists showed their concern stressing the strong measures be taken to curb the same.
The Sangh, while lauding the measures of Narendra Modi Government in restoring peace in Kashmir valley suggested that tight security measures be made in curbing activities of terrorists in Jammu region where many precious lives including those of security forces and police were lost in terror attacks.
Sources said giving feedback to the Union Home Minster, RSS leaders also stressed on strengthening and constitution of Village Defence Groups (VDGs) in border as well as higher reaches of Jammu which is vulnerable to terror attacks. Shah was informed that VDGs have proved deterrent in erstwhile Doda district when militancy was on peak there.
Sources said the Sangh and BJP leaders stressed on constituting and strengthening of VDGs in border belt as well as higher reaches of Jammu region to restore the confidence of people and dealt a strong blow to cross border terrorism.
Sources said both Sangh and BJP leaders apprised the Home Minister about the prevailing political situation in the UT especially after the formation of political Government last year. The restoration of Statehood was also discussed during the meeting by the Sangh and BJP leaders with Shah.
Allaying their apprehensions, the Home Minister, according to sources, made it clear to them that all efforts will be made to make security situation normal in the UT and the cross border terrorism will be dealt with iron hands as the Modi Government is committed to zero tolerance on terrorism. He said the proactive policy to curb terrorism has yielded results and there is a discernible change in J&K situation since the abrogation of Article 370 and our Government will continue to act tough against the anti national elements including their support structure.
Sources said the Sangh leaders expressed concern over spurt in terror incidents in Jammu region since the formation of NC Government last year and people especially in border belt and higher reaches of Kathua are feeling scared with the frequent movement and strike of terrorists.
Sources said Shah assured them that situation will be normalised soon. They added that the role of BJP as an opposition party was also discussed in the meeting and the Home Minister urged them that they have to perform a healthy opposition both inside the Assembly and outside and champion the cause of people of both regions of the UT.
Sources said Shah also reiterated during the meeting with Sangh and BJP senior leaders that the Statehood will be restored at an appropriate time as Modi Government is committed to that. “We have made a commitment in this regard on the floor of Parliament and our Government stands by that,” sources added.
